FIFA to experiment with goalmouth referees

Soccer’s 3-to-22 officials-to-player ratio is significantly lower than all major sports. Finally FIFA, the game’s world governing body, has approved an experiment with two additional referees. At the Club World Cup competition in Japan in December, two goalmouth referees will be used in addition to the referee and the two assistant referees (linesmen). What They’re Saying

“Personally, I’m not ashamed because I see how in a short time they have made very good progress, because I have taken them away from their women, from their wives. We went to the [training] base, because women in soccer are a scourge. They do not understand that men need to work, that they have a hard job to do.”

— Dynamo Kiev coach Josef Sabo, upon being asked by a female reporter if his team’s poor early-season performances as defending champion were shameful. (Reuters)
