American Kroenke Goes to Arsenal
Colorado Rapids owner Stan Kroenke visited Arsenal Football Club on Wednesday, touring its facilities and meeting the club’s board for the first time as he sought a deal that would strengthen ties between the two sides. Late last season, Kroenke and the Rapids agreed to a marketing alliance with the London club, but no deal […]

David Beckham returned to training with his L.A. Galaxy teammates on Wednesday for the first time since injuring his knee in August, but Coach Frank Yallop warned against the possibility of his returning to the England squad for its upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia. “He’s not even played any competitive games,” Yallop […]
Terry: Valencia Win Could Jumpstart Chelsea’s Season
The odds were very much against Chelsea going into Wednesday night’s Champions League clash with Spanish giant Valencia: the Blues’ first team had scored just one goal in its last four matches and the team still looked to be in disarray following the abrupt departure of former manager Jose Mourinho. Moreover, the club had to […]
Celtic Fan Banned for Dida Attack
A Celtic fan was banned from attending the club’s matches for life on Thursday for running on the field during a Champions League match against AC Milan and clotheslining its goalkeeper, Dida. The life ban was imposed on the 27-year-old fan by the club itself; UEFA, the organizing body of the Champions League, has yet […]

Travails of a two-sport star
Mark Buchholz should be applauded for his accomplishments as a two-sport star at Clemson. On most Friday nights, the Georgia native plays for the Tiger soccer team, for which he is a four-year starter. On Saturdays, he’s the field goal kicker on Tommy Bowden‘s football team. Problem is, recent misses on the gridiron have local pundits demanding that Buchholz quit soccer.

Quakes name John Doyle GM and ponder venues
The two men most responsible for the rebirth of the San Jose Earthquakes weren’t in attendance, but those who were there- including former Clash and Quakes defender John Doyle, who was named Wednesday as the team’s new general manager – heaped praise upon Oakland A’s co-owners John Fisher and Lewis Wolff, the money men behind the MLS expansion team. “I think a lot of it comes back to local ownership,” says A’s president Michael Crowley, who will fill the same role for the Quakes. “The team that was here previously never had that and I think you need that in any sport, baseball or soccer or whatever sport you name. Or whatever business you name, for that matter.”
Bulls hope to clinch playoff spot in Toronto
[TV PREVIEW] As they survey BMO Field and see the crowd and hear its passion, the players, coaches and officials of Red Bull New York must wonder if it will ever come to pass for them, this seemingly ideal melding of location, facility, and fandom. Red Bull Park is still years away. League games in the Meadowlands are ridiculously expensive and drained of atmosphere, except for the nine-goal appearance of David Beckham in early August.
Newcomers Emilio, Angel lead MLS scorers
[MLS STATS] With three games left, D.C. United’s Brazilian striker Luciano Emilio is the first MLS player to score 20 regular-season since Carlos Ruiz (24) and Taylor Twellman (23) did in 2002. With three more strikes Emilio would tie D.C. United’s single-season record, set by Raul Diaz Arce in 1996. The MLS record is 27, set by Roy Lassiter while with Tampa Bay in 1996. The second leading scorer this season is another South American newcomer: New York’s Juan Pablo Angel

Chelsea rises to occasion, Liverpool sinks at home
[CHAMPIONS LEAGUE REACTION/VIDEO] The results for English powerhouses Chelsea and Liverpool were exactly the opposite what you would have predicted when they took to the field Wednesday on Day 2 of the UEFA Champions League. Chelsea, which has yet to win an EPL game under new manager Avram Grant and was coming off a 1-1 tie at home to Rosenborg in its Champions League opener, won, 2-1, at Valencia, which took a seven-game winning streak into the game. Unbeaten in its first 11 games of the season, Liverpool lost, 1-0, at home to Marseille, which had won just one of its first nine French league game.
Revs riddle Dallas defense to lift U.S. Open Cup
Losers in all four of its previous finals, New England struck upon a novel approach for the 2007 U.S. Open Cup final Wednesday against host Dallas: attack and exploit. And win. The Revs, which had scored a grand total of two goals in losing the 2001 Open Cup final and 2002, 2005, and 2006 MLS Cups, thumped FCD, 3-2, to capture its first trophy with a blend of youth and experience.

Bad Luck Becks
“Overused … over-traveled, wearied, injured and sidelined,” thus sums up the first season of David Beckham in Major League Soccer, says the Wall Street Journal’s Stephen Barbara. Unlucky, might also be an appropriate adjective: Becks seems to have used up his luck for the year in helping Real Madrid win last season’s La Liga title. […]
L.A. May Yet Make the Playoffs
Don’t look now, but the Los Angeles Galaxy is once again building up fans’ hopes that it could slip into the MLS playoffs through the back door. The team has now won three games in a row, having tied one before that, and sits six points behind the Chicago Fire, current holder of the eighth […]
Disappointing Denilson Needs to Shine in Open Cup Final
FC Dallas has been in miserable form since signing Denilson, the team’s designated player and so-called biggest signing in franchise history, posting a 1-4-1 record in its last six games. Denilson, 31, has done little aside from converting a single penalty kick, and his circus trickery, while abundant, has proven ineffective thus far. Most recently, […]
Clubs Make Sacrifices for Champs League Success
In a little less 15 years, the UEFA Champions league has become the most important competition in the world, often to the detriment of the league form of many of Europe’s biggest clubs, says Rob Hughes of the International Herald Tribune. AC Milan, the 2003 and 2007 European champion and a runner-up in 2005, is […]
