Go On Bob, Say Something Interesting

[WPS] With a week to go before the Women’s Professional League’s draft of college players, to be held Jan. 16 at the NSCAA Convention in St. Louis, only four foreign players whose negotiating rights were obtained by WPS teams have signed to play in the 2009 season, but women’s soccer brightest star, Marta, is expected to sign with the Los Angeles Sol, perhaps as soon as Monday when the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year is announced in Zurich.

Europe Good For Davies

[INTERLIGA] Morelia cranked up its wheezing attack just in time to earn a spot in the Interliga finals by beating group winner Pachuca and getting some help from Toluca to edge through in second place. The final day of play in Group A at Home Depot Center Thursday produced a pair of attacking displays from teams desperately needing goals to advance. Morelia beat Pachuca, 3-0, and wound up in second place when Toluca knocked off UAG, 2-0, to eliminate the Tecos from advancing, which they would have done with a win.

Rummenigge: Podolski Deal Close

[MLS] If so many MLS coaches spend so much of their time scouting college players, why do they all show up at the MLS Combine, which begins Saturday in Fort Lauderdale? Well, every year, a Chris Rolfe (University of Dayton) or Geoff Cameron (Rhode Island) is on display and turns out to be pretty good. There might be a junior college kid (Pasadena CC) like current Kansas City Wizard forward Yura Movsisyan, and there will certainly be a slew of seniors who’ve played for top-notch programs like Maryland, Indiana, Wake Forest, UCLA, etc. Even if you’ve seen a team play a game or two, you can’t always get a good read on everybody.

A Real Problem

Reading FC coach Wally Downes has warned that soccer games could become drawn-out four-hour affairs and be subject to abuse by advertisers if video technology is introduced. He believes soccer would be ruined if games become like American football matches, which require at least three hours to complete 60 minutes of actual play.   Downes’ […]

2009 Combine Rosters

“He chooses his words so carefully that press conferences can slow to a crawl as he seems to weigh the possible ramifications of each statement before voicing it. Messi Bosses Atletico With Copa Hat Trick

I have long been a fan of “The Family Circus” comic strip. Perhaps my favorite strip of all time features the family dog barking up a storm in the middle of the night. Dad, irritated that he’s been awakened from a much-needed sleep, clomps down the stairs to yell at Barfy, who dutifully hangs his head. Dad climbs back up the stairs while the cartoonist has a surprise for us. He pans back so we see in the far corner of the yard a burglar retreating.

Club America and Guadalajara win big

Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill deserves the plaudits he’s currently receiving for taking his young and exciting side into fourth place in the English Premier League, writes Gabriele Marcotti. But please spare him all the nonsense that the team’s success is down to its “English spine.” He wonders, “Why is that praiseworthy? Because English players […]
