The USA reached the semifinals of Gold Cup 2002 thanks to a 4-0 victory over El Salvador on Sunday in which Brian McBride notched a hat trick and Ante Razov scored once. BY RIDGE MAHONEY Senior Editor in Pasadena, Calif. In and of itself, the U.S. demolition of El Salvador (4-0) in the Gold Cup quarterfinals isn’t a major accomplishment. A good win, yes, and really not as close as a four-goal margin would indicate, but this is an opponent that did not reach the final round […]

By Ridge Mahoney Senior Editor If the U.S. is knocked out in Sunday’s CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal, as was the case in the 2000 edition, the mostly MLS squad will suffer another black eye in the aftermath of contraction. That was a business failure; a loss Sunday would be deemed a competitive collapse and a […]

Brad Friedel and Joe-Max Moore advanced with their teams to the round of 16 in the English FA Cup and defender Greg Vanney got his first start with Bastia in the French First Division. Friedel’s exceptional performance allowed Blackburn Rovers to escape from Millwall’s Lion’s Den with a 1-0 victory when Andy Cole scored in […]

By Ridge Mahoney Senior Editor in Pasadena, Calif. Much more will be known about the U.S. team in another week, after it has played a quarterfinal and — presumably — a semifinal in the Gold Cup. In their group games, the Americans played poorly but scored two excellent goals to stun South Korea, 2-1, and […]

Less than 4,000 fans turned out at Miami’s Orange Bowl for the final day of first-round action in the Gold Cup, but they had quite an evening of excitement. In the first game, Martinique upset Trinidad & Tobago, 1-0, to join Costa Rica from group C in the quarterfinals. The French department, which also beat […]

Abby Wambach’s realization of what she could be transformed her game. Is the highly touted WUSA draft prospect America’s next star striker? Abby Wambach was among the country’s elite college forwards a year ago, a skilled technician big enough to dominate young defenders and consistently able to find the net. She was nothing more. That […]
